LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team played its first games on its new FieldTurf surface at Depew Field Wednesday afternoon, but came out on the wrong end of a pair of 10-3 decisions against Le Moyne. The Dolphins scored 11 of their 20 runs in the first two innings of the two seven-inning affairs, while the Bison managed just 14 hits in the doubleheader.
Bucknell's offense, which had been averaging nearly nine runs and 13 hits per game, totaled just six runs on Wednesday against five Le Moyne pitchers. Bob Donato, who posted three hits on the day, combined with Ben Allen, who was 2-for-4 in game one, for four of the team's six hits in the first contest. Kevin Drozin's 2-for-3 performance in game two led the Bison offense. Andrew Brouse and Drew Constable each drove in a run in both games.
Bison starting pitchers Alex Cillo (0-2) and Daniel Hart (0-1) both had rough outings as Le Moyne jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in game one and a 5-0 lead in game two. Cillo yielded six runs on six hits and walked three hitters in 1.2 innings, while Hart gave up five hits and five runs in his 1.2 innings of work. A total of 11 different Bucknell (10-10) pitchers took the mound in the doubleheader, including seven in game two.
By contrast, Le Moyne starters Erik Lambe (2-1) and Tom McDermott (2-1) combined to hurl 9.0 innings and allow eight hits, four runs and five walks.
The twinbill saw a total of 10 errors committed - five by each team. Six unearned runs crossed the plate, including four for the Dolphins.
Le Moyne (10-11) finished the doubleheader with 21 hits, but eight of those were for extra bases. The Bison totaled three extra-base hits, including a pair of doubles by Donato. His second double came in the sixth inning of game two when he grounded a ball through the right side and caught the right fielder napping as he rounded first hard and made it into second safely.
Bucknell could not overcome its early deficits as Le Moyne plated two runs in the first inning of game one and four more in the second inning. The Bison scored an unearned run and Constable drove home a run with a sac fly in the first, while an RBI single by Brouse in the second made it 6-3. However, Bucknell had just one runner reach third base over the final five innings of play.
Sean Paino was one of three Le Moyne players with multi-hit game ones as he was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Brett Botsford scored three runs in the contest.
Game two was similar to game one in that the Dolphins jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. The Bison offense struggled early, not recording a hit off Lambe until Brouse beat out a bunt in the fourth.
Constable knocked in a run in the fourth, while B.J. LaRosa collected an RBI single in the fifth. Brouse also knocked home Ben Yoder with a sac fly in the fifth, rounding out the scoring and making it 10-3.
After scoring five runs in the first two innings, Le Moyne scored four more in the fourth, three of which were unearned thanks to a pair of errors.
Bucknell retired the Dolphins in order just twice all day - in the seventh inning of game one by Marcus Garone and in the sixth inning of game two by Matt Lamore.
Paino added three doubles and two runs scored in game two, making him 5-for-8 with four runs scored and three RBIs in the doubleheader. Botsford drove in three runs in game two on a two-run single and a bases-loaded walk.
The Bison left a total of 19 runners on base, compared to just 10 for Le Moyne. In fact, Bucknell was just 7-for-34 with runners on base, while the Dolphins were 14-for-33.
Yoder, who had homered in each of his last three appearances, pinch hit in game one and grounded out to third, ending his 14-game hitting streak.
Bucknell will be back in action this weekend when it travels to Columbia for a four-game series with doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday starting at noon. The Bison are 2-1 against Ivy League schools this year, defeating Yale and Princeton and losing to Dartmouth.
