Bucknell Women's Tennis Stopped by Denison, Darkness

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Bucknell women's tennis won two matches but trailed Denison 4-2 in Hilton Head, S.C., on Monday night before the match was suspended due to darkness. Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) had a hand in both victories for the Bison, winning at first doubles with Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and at No. 2 singles. The match, which was being scored according to Division III rules with a point going to each doubles victory, will not be completed.
Lucido and Varela opened play for Bucknell with an 8-2 win over the Big Red's Kristin Cobb and Marta Drane. Lucido went on to claim a smooth straight-sets victory over Cobb in singles, 6-1, 6-2. The doubles win was the sixth straight for Lucido and Varela, while the Bison junior earned her sixth singles win in seven matches.
The Bison's other doubles squads had a more difficult time. Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) fell 8-4 at the second position, while Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) fell 9-7 at third doubles.
Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) were the only two other Bison matches to be completed. Dwojewski lost 6-2, 6-0 to Laura Krull at fourth singles. Rottkamp was defeated 7-6, 6-3 by Kara Zedanowski at No. 6.
Bucknell was leading in each of the three unfinished contests when the match was suspended.
Bucknell will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on North Georgia at 8 a.m. in Hilton Head, S.C.
