LEWISBURG, Pa. - It is the middle of February and the first Bucknell baseball game is now less than two weeks away. While the dawn of a new season is nearly here, Eric Junge, a 1999 Bucknell graduate and former Bison pitcher, recently wrapped up play in the Caribbean Series.
Junge, who was a co-captain of the 1999 Bucknell squad that tied for the Patriot League regular-season title, had a strong winter, going 5-3 with a 3.72 ERA, mostly as a reliever, for Magallanes, which lost in seven games to Caracas in the Venezuelan championship series. Magallanes was 41-22 during the regular season and tied for first place in the standings.
Junge then moved on to play in the Caribbean Series with the Venezuelan squad. Junge posted a 2.08 ERA in 8.2 innings of relief work over three contests. He capped the series with five innings of two-run pitching on Sunday in a loss to eventual champion Dominican Republic.
An 11th round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft, Junge made his major league debut in 2002 with the Philadelphia Phillies. He owns a career MLB record of 2-0 with a 2.21 ERA in 10 career appearances.
The 6-5 right-hander has played for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (2003-04, 2007), the Clearwater Threshers (2004), the Norfolk Tides (2005), the Portland Beavers (2006), the Bridgeport Bluefish (2007), the Orix Buffaloes (2008) and the Lancaster Barnstormers (2009) since 2003.
Junge finished his Bison career with a 16-15 record and held the program record with 12 saves at the time of graduation. He was the first Bucknell player drafted by an MLB team since 1986.
