LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's basketball fell victim to some stellar shooting from Navy, leading to a 61-46 loss at Sojka Pavilion on Saturday night. Navy (12-11, 4-4) shot 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) from 3-point range to drop Bucknell's record to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League.
Navy shot 50 percent or better from everywhere on the court. The Mids' finished the night 52.3 percent (23-for-44) from the field with more than half of those shots coming from behind the 3-point arc, 50 percent (3-for-6) from the free throw line. Navy's 12 made 3-pointers tied a Sojka Pavilion record for an opponent.
Bucknell suffered the opposite fate, shooting 36.1 percent (22-for-61) from the field and 16.7 percent (2-for-12) from behind the 3-point line. The Bison also ended the night at 0-for-6 on free throws, marking the first time the home team failed to make a charity shot at Sojka Pavilion.
The Mids' shooting success did not come immediately as their first possession ended with a shot clock violation. Their second possession, however, kick started the long-range show as K.C. Gordon put her team up 3-0.
Trisha Krewson (Sandusky, Ohio/Perkins) answered with a jumper, but the Bison's one-point deficit at 3-2 was the closest they got the rest of the night. Six minutes into the game, Navy was 4-for-5 from three with each shot made by a different player. Six minutes after that, the visiting team had improved that to 7-for-8 to claim a 26-11 advantage.
Joyce Novacek (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and Krewson did their best to keep Bucknell in the mix during that stretch, hitting a pair of field goals each, but the Bison just could not keep up with the Mids' pace. At the half, Bucknell trailed 31-21.
The second frame was much of the same. Novacek continued to hit from inside, but for every layup the Bison forward connected on, the Midshipmen answered with a 3-pointer. Navy sank four consecutive 3-point shots in a four-minute span, then added an old-fashioned three-point play on a layup and a free throw by Angela Myers. That gave Navy its largest lead of the game at 50-31.
Bucknell managed a 10-2 run after that, but was never able to get Navy's lead back down to less than 11.
Most of the Bison's scoring came in the paint, as the Bison outscored the Mids 32-12 from under the basket. Lindsay Horbatuck (Avon, Conn./Avon) played a big part in the total. The freshman registered her first double-digit rebound game, and eight of her 10 boards came on the offensive glass. Two of her three assists also ended in fast break layups.
Novacek led the Bison with 16 points and finished second to Horbatuck in rebounds with seven. She also had three assists, two steals and a block. Krewson finished with nine points, ending her streak of 10 consecutive games in double-figure scoring.
Navy's Myers led all players with 18 points and six assists. She was joined in double figures by Cassie Consedine with 15 points, including 4-for-6 from behind the arc, and Gordon with 12.
Bucknell is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 10 when it hosts American at 7 p.m. The game has been designated a WBCA Pink Zone game. Pink t-shirts, sponsored by Evangelical Community Hospital, will be given out at the game to help promote awareness of breast cancer and women's health. The Bison will also be celebrating National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
