LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team had 10 All-Patriot League selections, the league office announced on Friday. The Bison's 10 selections ranked second in the league, behind only Navy's 17. The Mids won the Patriot League title at last week's meet, one spot ahead of the Bison, who were runners-up for the third consecutive year.
Bucknell's 10 honorees featured two seniors, one junior, four sophomores and three freshmen and they are natives of seven different states, including Connecticut, Indiana and Colorado.
Senior Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) and sophomore Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) represented the Bison on the first team, while senior Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse), junior Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional), sophomores Nathaniel Frye (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area), Jonathan Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), along with freshmen Billy Krause (Huntington Bay, N.Y./Saint Anthony's), David Magaro (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) and Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) landed on the second team.
DeLeon, Fletcher, Frye, Podniesinski, Sokolosky and Trafton each had been named All-League in previous years, but only DeLeon and Trafton had previously been on the first team.
Both of the All-Patriot League teams are comprised of 18 student-athletes. First-team status is automatically awarded to competitors who earn a first-place finish at the championship meet. The remaining first-team slots are filled by student-athletes with the highest remaining individual point totals from the meet. Second-team status is automatically given to all second-place finishers who do not otherwise have enough points to move up to the first team. The remaining second-team slots are then filled by competitors with the highest remaining point totals.
Sokolosky was a first-team selection due to his first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle at last week's meet. It was his first career individual title, but it marked the second straight year a Bison won the event as Mark Kawczenski captured it last February. Sokolosky also finished third in the 100 free and 12th in the 100 fly as he piled up 41 individual points to rank 15th in the league. He has now been named All-League in two consecutive years after a second-team citation last season.
Fletcher posted three top-three finishes to earn his third straight All-League honor. He was second in the 200 back, third in the 100 back and third in the 200 IM en route to earning 49 points at the championship meet. He was a Second Team All-League choice each of the last two years and scored points in 11 individual events in his career.
After three consecutive years on the first team, Trafton picked up his fourth All-League honor with a second-team certificate. Entering the 2010 championships, only 14 athletes in Patriot League history had been named All-League four times. Frye, who posted a pair of top-five finishes, and Podniesinski, who was in the top-eight in three events, each landed on the second team for the second straight year. Segar earned his position on the second team with a runner-up finish in the 200 free, while DeLeon was an All-League choice for the third straight year after scoring in three events and posting two top-eight finishes.
Bucknell's freshman trio of Krause, Magaro and Treat accounted for 101 total points as they combined for seven top-eight finishes. Magaro's second-place showing off the one-meter diving board when he set a personal-best score, was the best finish for any of the Bison freshmen.
Bucknell's runner-up finish was its third in a row at the Patriot League Championships. The Bison have finished in the top-three at the Patriot League Championships for five consecutive years.
