Bucknell Women's Tennis Suffers 4-3 Setback to Duquesne

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis came within one match of getting its first win of the spring season but fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Duquesne at the West Branch Tennis Club on Saturday. After earning the doubles point, the Bison also got wins from Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) at first and second singles.
Lucido and Varela each earned a pair of victories. The duo teamed up for an 8-2 win over Duquesne's Rachel McGowan and Zena Williams at No. 1 doubles. They then made quick work of their singles opponents with Lucido winning over Ana Mungo at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Varela defeated Williams 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Lucido's win over Mungo was the second of the year. She also defeated the Dukes' junior for the Flight A championship at the Bucknell Invitational in September.
To complete the best-of-three for the doubles point, Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) defeated Erin Conroy and Tara Majdalani by a score of 8-3 at the No. 3 position.
Bucknell was unable to get the winning point despite some close matches. Tuzhikova took her match at No. 6 singles to three sets but could not upset Majdalani. Tuzhikova won the first set 6-2 before dropping the final sets 2-6 and 1-6. Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) did her best for a comeback at the No. 5 position. After failing to hold serve in the first set, the senior held her own in the second. The late push was not enough, however, as she fell 6-0, 7-5.
Bucknell is back in action Sunday, Feb. 28 when it travels to Penn. Match time is slated for 12 p.m.
