Bucknell Women's Tennis Takes 4-3 Loss at Penn

PHILADELPHIA - Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) each earned a pair of wins, but the strong play from the Bison's top two players was not enough to give Bucknell women's tennis its first win of the season. The Bison lost 4-3 to Penn at Levy Pavilion on Sunday afternoon, dropping their spring record to 0-4.
For the second consecutive week, Lucido and Varela tallied two of the squad's three points in a match. The duo teamed up at No. 1 doubles, earning a tough 9-8 win over Alexa Ely and Jacqueline Wong. Although their opponent forced a tiebreak, Lucido and Varela had an easier time in the final points, winning the breaker 7-1.
Both Bucknell players continued winning at the top two singles positions. Lucido again got the best of Ely at first singles, 6-1 and 6-4. Varela defeated Emily Wolf at the No. 2 position, also by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
Varela is 5-2 in singles matches since play resumed in January. The senior is also 2-2 at doubles when teamed with Lucido in dual action.
Also earning a win at doubles to give Bucknell a point in the team score was Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7). The tandem defeated Daniela DePaoli and Emma Whitfield in easy fashion, 8-0.
Iepuras and Tuzhikova are now 4-0 at No. 3 doubles this spring, including wins in each of the Bison's last three matches.
Bucknell will return to the courts next weekend, taking on a trio of New York opponents. The Bison will face Niagara in North Tonawanda, N.Y., on Friday, March 5, followed by St. Bonaventure in Olean on Saturday and Syracuse on Sunday.
