Bucknell Women's Tennis Sweeps Niagara for First Win of Season

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. - Bucknell women's tennis won its first match of the year, defeating Niagara 7-0 in North Tonawanda, N.Y., on Friday. The Bison swept the singles contests and took two of three doubles matches to improve their record to 1-4 on the year.
Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) continued their dominance at No. 1 doubles. The duo defeated Hilary Hansen and Alyssa Lucas in easy fashion at 8-1. Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) and Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) also recorded their fourth consecutive victory together at the No. 3 position, sailing past Emma Cunningham and Julia Gray 8-0.
Lucido faced Hansen for a second time in the day at first singles. The junior had a more difficult time in the meeting, dropping the first set 6-0. Lucido came back down the line, however, taking the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 for her fourth straight singles win.
With her two wins, Lucido improved her career combined record to 101-45, making her the ninth Bison in program history to surpass the 100 wins mark.
The remaining Bison had a smoother path to their singles victories. Varela defeated Raquel Solis at the No. 2 position at 6-0, 6-0 to claim her second win of the day. Iepuras and Tuzhikova were also the victors for a second time with Iepuras defeating Brittany Walters 6-2, 6-3 and Tuzhikova taking the 6-2, 6-0 decision over Gray.
Rounding out Bucknell's wins was Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) at No. 3 singles. The senior defeated Cunningham 6-0, 6-1.
Bucknell will have little time to enjoy their team win. The team takes on St. Bonaventure in Olean, N.Y., tomorrow at 10 a.m.
