WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) earned the Bison's lone point, but Bucknell's men's tennis could not pull out the team victory, dropping a 6-1 decision to Duquesne at West Branch Tennis Club on Saturday. Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) also added a win at doubles for the Bison.
Cohenca earned his second win of the year at No. 2 singles. The sophomore defeated the Dukes' Aram Abgaryan 6-4 and 6-4. Katten was the only other Bison able to take a set off his opponent in the singles matches. After Katten lost the first set, 6-1, to Matt Smith, he came fighting back for a 6-1 win in the second. Smith then got the better of his Bison foe in the super tiebreaker at 10-8.
Katten did pull out the win with elder teammate Hascoe at No. 3 doubles. The duo defeated Smith and Bryan Roberts, 8-6. Despite another close match, Bucknell fell just short of earning the doubles point. Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) also closed out their match at the No. 2 position by a score of 8-6. However, it was the Duquesne team of Jeremy McClelland and Gustavo Villares that came out on top.
The meeting with the Dukes was not the only 6-1 loss for the Bison this weekend. Bucknell also was defeated by the same score by Georgetown in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday. Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) earned the Bison's only point at No. 1 singles, defeating Anthony Tan in a marathon match. After winning the first set relatively easily at 6-2, Tan came back in the second for a 7-5 win. The two battled it out through the third set with Kovic walking away with the 11-9 victory.
Zimmer and Morque had a battle on their hands as well, this time coming at the No. 2 doubles position. The duo did not fare as well, however, taking a 9-7 loss to Tan and Will Lowell. The sweep of the doubles competition was just what the Hoyas needed to get the ball rolling. The hiccup at first singles turned out to be the only blemish on their score for the day.
Bucknell will try to get back on track next Saturday, Feb. 27. The Bison will take on Binghamton in Ithaca, N.Y., with the match scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
