LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bison men's indoor track and field squad finished the 2009-10 regular season on a high note with a number of strong performances Saturday at the Bucknell Winter Classic. The Bison, who will compete at the Patriot League Championships next weekend, finished first or second in most events, with a highlight coming in the 60-meter hurdles, where the Orange & Blue took five of the top seven places.
Bucknell won seven events on the day, none more dominating than the hurdles, where the finals were a sea of Orange & Blue. Senior Andrew Yehl, who is the school record-holder in this event, won it in an IC4A Championship-qualifying time of 8.21 seconds. Sophomore Rob Arent was second in 8.30, followed by senior Sean Coyne (8.45) in a tie for third, sophomore Dan Mularz (8.49) in fifth and freshman Jason Brown (8.74) in seventh.
In the distance events, junior Stephen Dorsey won the 5,000 meters in 15:18.64, while sophomore Dave Brown (8.26.07) and senior Andrew Huebner (8:30.92) went 1-2 in the 3,000. Brown's time met the IC4A qualifying standard. Senior Baron Willeford was runner-up in the 1,000 (2:35.59), as was senior Conor McNamara in the mile (4:16.90).
Bucknell also had the second-place finisher in all three sprints. Freshman Justin Hicks was runner-up in the 60-meter dash in an IC4A time of 6.92. Senior Gregory Baxter took second in the 400 (50.75), and junior Clayton Smith did the same in the 500 (.1:05.60). In the 800-meter run, junior Christopher Boyd (1:54.45) and senior Kyle Ramer (1:54.92) went 2-3.
The 4x400-meter relay team posted a new mark on the program's all-time leaderboard, as Arent, sophomore Jordan Donaldson, junior Evan Novakowski and junior John Picardo won the event in 3:19.11, which met the IC4A qualifying standard.
The Bison posted three more wins in the field events, led by senior Ryan White's new personal best in the pole vault. White cleared 15 feet, 5.75 inches, which moves him into fifth on Bucknell's career list. Junior Drew Fitzgerald tied for first in the high jump at 6-8.25, while senior Kyle Anthony was victorious in his first long-jump competition of the year. Bell's top distance was 22-7.75.
Sophomore weight thrower Tom Barr was third, and his mark of 55-0.75 was a personal best and the No. 8 throw in program history. Bucknell also took fourth and fifth in the shot put with Jonathan Lockhart leading the way with a throw of 50-4.50.
The Bison begin competition at the Patriot League Championships next Friday at West Point.
