LEWISBURG, Pa. -- In its final tuneup prior to next week's Patriot League Championships, the Bison women's track and field team turned in some impressive showings Saturday at the non-scoring Bucknell Winter Classic, held in Gerhard Fieldhouse. The middle distance group had some of the most impressive perfomances of day, as Bucknell turned in 1-2 finishes in both the 800 and 1,000, as well as a dominating seven-second win in the 4x400-meter relay.
Sophomore Stephanie Fulmer ran away with the 1,000-meter run. Her winning time of 2:54.81 was a personal best and placed her in a tie for sixth on Bucknell's all-time list. It also qualified her for the ECAC Championships. Senior Laura Cundey was second in the 1,000 in 3:06.04.
In the 800-meter run, it was freshman Caroline Tolli and senior Allison Janda finishing exactly one second apart in sweeping the top two places. Tolli's personal-best time of 2:18.45 is now within three seconds of Bucknell's top-10 list. Sophomore miler Alysha Hooper was runner-up in 5:09.25.
It was almost all Orange & Blue atop the leaderboard in the 200-meter dash. Senior Kalle James-Wintjen, a Lewisburg native, won it in 26.30, while senior Lindsay Appel (26.59), sophomore Christina Muccio (26.73) and freshman Sasha Hornock (26.86) finished second, third and fifth.
Appel and James-Wintjen also sparked the 4x400 relay, which posted a time of 3:55.51 that was almost seven full seconds faster than runner-up Lock Haven. Senior Jennifer Pierce and sophomore Emily Liggett were also on the relay.
The Bison posted two victories in field events. Senior weight thrower Chelsey Musante won with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 55 feet, 11.75 inches, while classmate Amy Mantush captuerd the high jump with a leap of 5-5. Bucknell was also strong once again in the shot put, as sophomore Sarah Bella (44-4.75), Musante (43-7.25) and sophomore Rebecca Misko (40-8.75) finished 2-3-4.
Bucknell will be back in action on Friday, as the three-day Patriot League Championships get underway at Army's Gillis Fieldhouse.
