WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The 2010 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships got underway on Friday with the women's pentathlon and the men's heptathlon, and Bucknell has already crowned its first gold medalist as senior Amy Mantush won the pentathlon.
Mantush compiled 3,449 points in the pentathlon to outdistance runner-up Arian Davis of Navy, who had 3,326. Mantush eclipsed her own personal best in the event by 14 points, and she remains third on Bucknell's all-time performance list. En route to the victory, she won the long jump and high jump, took second in the 60-meter hurdles, third in the shot put and ninth in the 800 meters.
Mantush was named Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet at the 2009 outdoor championships after winning the triple jump and high jump. She is Bucknell's first pentathlon champion since Nina Reinhardt in 2005.
The men's heptathlon is through four events, with the remainder still to come on Saturday morning. Bucknell has four of the top eight competitors, including the second-place athlete in sophomore Andrew Powell. Brian Zitterkopf of Navy has the lead with 2,737 points, but Powell and Army's David Linder are right behind with 2,716. Powell, who won both the high jump and long jump, is trying to earn All-Patriot League honors for the second straight season, as he did so in soccer in the fall.
Also for Bucknell, senior Ryan White is fifth with 2,632, freshman Jason Brown is seventh with 2,504 and senior Thomas Vogler is eighth with 2,503.
The Patriot League Championships continue through Sunday at West Point's Gillis Fieldhouse.
