LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis will face a pair of in-state opponents this weekend, starting with Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday. The Bison-Red Flash matchup is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start in Loretto, Pa. Bucknell will continue its trip to University Park, Pa., on Sunday for its 2 p.m. bout with Penn State.
ABOUT THE BISON
- Bucknell is 0-2 this spring after its most recent loss to St. John's on Jan. 30. Although Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) pushed their opponents to tiebreakers in their respective singles matches, the Bison were swept 7-0.
- Morque continues to lead Bucknell in doubles victories this year with an 8-5 record despite not having a win this spring. Clark Bogle (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) and Josh Katten (Plainview N.Y./Plainview JFK) have teamed up to give the Bison their only doubles win to date.
- Katten is also the team leader in singles wins, registering a 9-5 record so far in his first year in the Orange and Blue.
- Although they have gotten off to a slow start, the Bison have three of the top 15 doubles players in program history. Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) is ninth all-time, followed by Kovic in 14th and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) in 15th. Kovic, however, is the only Bison with a doubles victory this season as Hascoe is returning from injury and Malloy has yet to play after spending a semester abroad.
ABOUT THE RED FLASH
- Bucknell is 9-0 all-time against Saint Francis. The teams last met in 2008 with the Bison coming out on top, 6-1. Bucknell swept the doubles competition and took wins in second through sixth singles. The only blemish on the Bison's score came after a hard-fought match at No. 1 singles that ended with the Red Flash's Andrei Sandu defeating Ryan Sandburg 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.
- Saint Francis lost its only match this spring, falling 7-0 to Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne last Sunday. The Red Flash were 2-1 in duals in the fall, winning over Robert Morris (5-2) and Juniata (9-0).
- Saint Francis has had some turnover in its player personnel. Neither of the team's two All-Northeast Conference selections from a year ago returns in 2009-10.
ABOUT THE NITTANY LIONS
- Bucknell is 14-58-2 all-time against Penn State. Beginning in 1921, it is one of the longest-running series in Bucknell program history. Four other series (CCNY, Lehigh, Maryland, Susquehanna) also began in 1921. The Bison have also played the Nittany Lions more than any other opponent, with this being the teams' 75th meeting.
- Penn State dominated when it played Bucknell last year, winning 7-0. Every match was decided in straight sets.
- The Nittany Lions already have five matches under their belt this spring and have recorded a 4-1 record in the process. The team's lone loss came 4-2 at Georgia Tech, while its victories came at the expense of Princeton (6-1), Lehigh (7-0), Furman (6-1) and Maryland (5-2).
LOOKING AHEAD
Bucknell will head to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Georgetown at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19. The squad will then return home to host Duquesne at the West Branch Tennis Club in Williamsport on Saturday, Feb. 20. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
