LEWISBURG, Pa. - Seniors Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) and Jay Hahn (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), as well as sophomore Corey Lear (Orangeville, Pa./Benton Area), each posted two victories, but the Bucknell wrestling team split a pair of matches with Drexel and Princeton at the Bison Duals Friday afternoon inside Davis Gym. The Bison opened with a 34-9 victory over the Dragons, but the Tigers upended Bucknell 18-16 in the final match of the day. Drexel opened the day with a tight 18-17 victory over Princeton as all three teams posted 1-1 records at the event.
Bucknell (2-4, 0-2 EIWA) used 13 different wrestlers in the two matches and forfeited at 133 pounds against both Drexel (4-7) and Princeton (2-5, 1-1 EIWA).
Hahn had perhaps the strongest showing of the day as the 197-pounder defeated Drexel's Brandon Palik by a 6-1 decision in the opener thanks to five points in the last 55 seconds and followed that with an 11-3 win over Dan Santoro, Bucknell's lone bonus-point victory against Princeton.
Hahn took to the mat against the Tigers with the Bison trailing 18-9 and knowing he needed to score bonus points. He repeatedly tried to pin Santoro, but was unable to do so. However, in the process, he outscored him 7-2 in the third period, bringing the Bison to within 18-13 with one bout to go.
LeValley, who needed to come from behind to defeat Princeton's Brandon Rolnick 6-2, registered one of four consecutive Bucknell bonus-point wins against Drexel with a 17-1 tech fall over Austin Sommer. LeValley, who is ranked No. 3 in the nation at 149 pounds, kept his record this year perfect as he improved to 10-0 on the season.
Lear, who wrestled three top-15 opponents in his last three bouts, welcomed his unranked foes on Friday as he defeated Drexel's Alex Rinaldi, 9-0, and Princeton's Jason Ott, 6-2. Lear is now 12-3 on the season and has lost just once to an unranked opponent.
Bucknell and Drexel wrestled only eight bouts as there were forfeits at both 125 and 133. The Bison claimed the first seven bouts as they opened up a 34-6 advantage. Zac Hancock (Laura, Ohio/Troy Christian), Brantley Hooks (Spartanburg, S.C./James F. Byrnes), David Thompson (West Liberty, Ohio/Graham Local) and Rob Waltko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) joined LeValley, Hahn and Lear in the winner's column. Freshman Austin Fallon (Centreville, Va./Westfield) almost made it a sweep for Bucknell, but he lost 2-1 at heavyweight on a riding time point.
The Bison dug a hole against Princeton as the Tigers jumped out to a 12-0 lead through three bouts. Bucknell was able to close the gap, but two close matches went in favor of Princeton. The first was the 157-pound battle between Hooks and Daniel Kolodzik. Hooks scored a takedown with just over a minute to go in the third period to take a 5-4 lead. However, Kolodzik almost immediately escaped, tying the score. He then earned the riding time, giving the Tigers a 15-3 advantage.
Back-to-back wins by Lear and Stephen McPeek (Southlake, Texas/Bishop Lynch) narrowed the Bucknell deficit to 15-9 with three bouts to go. Joe McMullan (Easton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) had a chance to keep the Bison in it, but lost 8-6 in overtime to Travis Erdman at 184 pounds. McMullan earned the tying point seconds before the end of the third period when Erdman was whistled for his second stall warning. However, Erdman scored a controversial takedown that drew a rise out of the Bucknell bench 39 seconds into the sudden victory period for an 8-6 win, virtually sealing the win for Princeton which led by nine points with just two bouts remaining.
After Hahn's major decision at 197, Conor Sweeney (Gladstone, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) had a chance to tie the match with a tech fall or win the match with a pin. He could not do either, although he did post his seventh career victory with a 5-2 decision.
Bucknell will step away from dual action in the upcoming weeks as it will compete at the Midlands Championships Dec. 28-29 in Evanston, Ill. The Bison's next dual will be at the competitive Virginia Duals the second weekend in January.
