LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell defenders Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's) and Mayowa Alli (Lanham, Md./Bishop McNamara), two Bison who played key roles in the team's clutch overtime win over Lehigh on Saturday, have been awarded Patriot League weekly honors. Powell was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, while Alli earned Rookie of the Week honors.
The Bison had to defeat Lehigh on the road in order to qualify for the Patriot League Tournament, and things were not looking good after the Mountain Hawks went up 1-0 on a penalty kick early in the second half. But in the 76th minute, Powell fed teammate CK Kumah for the tying goal, and then at 3:10 of sudden-death overtime, Alli drilled home a rebound to give Bucknell the result it needed to keep its season going.
Powell, who also scored a goal in a midweek game at Binghamton last week, now has two goals and two assists from his center back position. An All-Patriot League selection in 2009, Powell helped the Bison limit Lehigh to only seven total shots and only four on goal in the game.
Alli now has three goals and three assists on his rookie season, and all of the goals have come at critical times. The other two came 50 seconds apart in the 86th minute against Colgate two weeks ago, helping the Bison salvage a wild 3-3 with the regular-season champion Raiders.
Bucknell and Colgate will meet again on Friday in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. Game time is 5 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y.
