WASHINGTON, D.C. - Third-seeded Bucknell field hockey went toe-to-toe with No. 2 Lafayette in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals at American's Jacobs Field, but the Bison could not pull off the upset, falling 3-2 on Friday afternoon. Mallory Smith (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) broke open the scoring with her first goal of the season, and Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) added her 10th goal of the year. The Bison close out the 2010 season with an overall record of 7-12.
Bruvik finished the day with three points after also assisting on Smith's goal. With Smith waiting by the left goal post, Bruvik dumped the ball down to her younger teammate after scooting around the defense on a breakaway. Smith then had the time and space for an easy tip in to put the Bison ahead 1-0 just 8:14 into the start of the game.
Bucknell's lead did not last long, however, as Lafayette scored two minutes later on an unassisted goal from Kristin Heaney. Meghan Cicchi tallied her first goal of the day by scoring for the Leopards at the 12 minute mark. That put Lafayette ahead 2-1 on a deflection following a penalty corner.
Bruvik kept things from getting out of hand before halftime. The senior received a long pass across the field from Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) that pulled Lafayette goalkeeper Kelsey Andersen out of the cage. Andersen's play left Bruvik with an open net, and the forward took advantage of the open net, tying the game at two apiece.
With her offensive production in her final career game, Bruvik moved into the Bucknell top 10 in both career and single-season points. After four years in the Orange and Blue, she has 60 career points, tying her with Hall of Famer Almira Baldwin for 10th all-time. Bruvik also finished with 26 points this season, tying her with Baldwin and Michelle Manoff for ninth.
Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary) continued to make strong saves in goal for the Bison, and she nearly had her eighth win of the season until the Lafayette penalty corner unit struck again. Cicchi wrapped up the scoring on a direct shot from the top of the circle, sending the Leopards to a championship matchup with American tomorrow.
Lafayette's penalty corner unit kept busy throughout the game. The Leopards held a 13-5 advantage in the category at the final buzzer. They also outshot the Bison 22-6.
Zargarpour made eight saves and allowed three goals in the loss. Andersen earned the win with one save and two goals allowed.
