Bucknell's Weiss Selected Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell's Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) collected her second league honor in as many days, earning the title of Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday. Weiss also is joined on the first-ever Field Hockey Academic All-Patriot League Team by teammates Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) and Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary).
Weiss is Bucknell's sixth Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the first since Kelly Hoffman in 2007. A senior management major with a 3.82 cumulative grade-point average, Weiss has been named to the Bucknell Dean's List all six semesters of her career and is a three-time selection to both the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Academic Squad. She is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society and a former participant in the Bucknell in Northern Ireland program where she studied post-conflict peace building at the University of Ulster.
Named to the All-Patriot League First Team yesterday, Weiss has started all 72 games in her career and has played a key role in the Bison defense. Bucknell's opponents have managed just 11.9 shots and 2.83 goals per game this season. Offensively, Weiss has four goals for eight points this fall. She enters the final stretch of her career with 11 goals, all of which have come in the last two seasons, seven assists and 29 points.
Away from the field and the classroom, Weiss has participated in several internships, including with the media and accounts department at Klunk & Millan Advertising Agency, in public relations and marketing at the Da Vinci Science Center and in media relations with the Lehigh Athletic Department. A native of Bethlehem, Pa., Weiss also lists councilor at several field hockey camps, tutor at Montandon Elementary School with Bucknell Buddies and team representative to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) on her extensive resume.
Weiss, Siegrist and Zargarpour are some of the first members to be named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team. The Academic All-Patriot League Team has been added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The field hockey team has 11 student-athletes to equal the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first team. Student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or a key reserve. Award winners are determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors.
Like Weiss, Siegrist has also earned her second award of the week with her selection to the academic team. The sophomore's 3.83 GPA while majoring in management has garnered a pair of selections to the Bucknell Dean's List and the Patriot League Honor Roll, which includes all student-athletes with a 3.2 GPA or better and does not involve a vote. After being named to her first NFHCA All-Academic Squad, the defender then earned an invitation to the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society last season. Siegrist is the only sophomore to earn a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team.
At the end of the 2010 regular season, Siegrist ranks among Bucknell's top five in points (10), goals (3) and assists (4). She has started every game on the back line for the Bison over the last two seasons, leading the team to four shut outs and one of the league's best goals against averages. Her prowess on the field led to a Second Team All-Patriot League selection yesterday.
When not playing field hockey or in the classroom, Siegrist can be found training with Bucknell track and field. As a freshman last year, she set the third-best javelin mark in program history, throwing 139 feet, 10 inches. Siegrist is also a member of the university's German Club and spent last summer working with field hockey camps at Bucknell and Penn State and competing in the USA Field Hockey High Performance Championships where she led Pennsylvania to a junior title.
Rounding out Bucknell's league-leading three selections to the academic team is Zargarpour with a 3.62 GPA while majoring in management and minoring in international relations. Zargarpour has been named to the Bucknell Dean's List every semester and is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and NFHCA All-Academic Squad member.
Also a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, she is active in the community as a volunteer with Bucknell's I Serve to Serve program, the YMCA and the Mostly Mutts Dog Shelter. Zargarpour also remains active in field hockey in her native British Columbia as an assistant coach with the West Vancouver Field Hockey Club and as a referee for youth games.
On the field, Zargarpour has enjoyed a breakout season as the Bison's starting goalkeeper. The junior has a 7-10 record to go along with a 2.32 goals against average and a save percentage of .641. Her four shutouts this fall is tied for ninth on Bucknell's single-season list, while her 10 career wins ranks 11th all-time in program annals.
Several Bison joined Weiss and Siegrist in the honors when the All-Patriot League teams and major awards were announced yesterday. Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) was named the league's Rookie of the Year. She was also a Second Team All-Patriot League selection along with Siegrist and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor). Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) joined Weiss on the first team as a unanimous selection.
Bucknell finished the regular season with an overall record of 7-11. The Bison's 3-2 Patriot League mark earned them the third seed in the league tournament this weekend.
