LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell sophomore forward Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./Pingry School) has been named one of 37 finalists for the Soccer News Net Player of the Year Award. Fan voting is currently being conducted, which will account for 40 percent of the tabulation.
The editors of each of the six sites in the Soccer News Net network nominated up to six local players for the award, each of which will be eligible for the regional player of the year award. The nominations included athletes playing at colleges within each site's coverage area, as well as athletes from the area playing collegiately elsewhere in the country. Ten additional at-large selections rounded out the nominations.
Fans from across the country will be able to vote for the top collegiate player. Voting is underway and continues until Dec. 23 on Big Apple Soccer (www.bigapplesoccer.com), ChicagoLand Soccer News (www.chicagolandsoccernews.com), LA Soccer News (www.lasoccernews.com), New England Soccer News (www.newenglandsoccernews.com), Philly Soccer News (www.phillysoccernews.com) and Dallas Soccer News (www.dallassoccernews.com).
Online fan voting will account for 40% of the total toward the award. The remaining 60% of the vote will be cast by the editorial staffs of the six web sites.
In 2009, Bucknell's Conor O'Brien was a finalist for Soccer News Net Player of the Year, and O'Brien was named the Philly Soccer News Player of the Year.
Burgdorf, the 2010 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, was nominated by Philly Soccer news along with Penn State's Corey Hertzog and Matheus Braga, La Salle's Ryan Richter, Duke's Andrew Wenger and Providence's Matt Marcin.
In addition to his conference player of the year award, Burgdorf also earned First Team All-Patriot League honors after producing six goals and two assists for 14 points this fall. The six goals were one shy of the Patriot League lead, and the 14 points ranked third in the conference.
Two of his goals came in Patriot League games against Holy Cross and Colgate. Early in the season he scored in back-to-back games against Penn State and Ohio State en route to all-tournament honors at the Penn State Classic. He had the game-winner in the 77th minute against the 15th-ranked Nittany Lions. Burgdorf also scored a dramatic tying goal with 1:23 left in regulation against Drexel in a game the Bison later won in overtime.
Bucknell captured the 2010 Patriot League championship -- its third league title in the last five years -- and went on to compete in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history. The Bison fell in overtime at Penn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season 10-9-2.
