LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey's Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) led a group of five Bison to be honored by the Patriot League on Tuesday when the freshman was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) and Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) were also named First Team All-Patriot League, while Misko, Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) were second-team honorees.
Misko becomes Bucknell's eighth Rookie of the Year in program history. The last Bison to earn the league's title of top newcomer was Amanda Faust in 2005. Bucknell's five all-league selections also ties the most in program history. The last time five Bison were named All-Patriot League in the same season came in 1998 when Katey Twombly and Jen Zimmerman were first-team honorees and Malina Anderson, Maureen Breslin and Dena Ebert copped second-team honors. It is also the fifth consecutive year in which Bucknell has earned two spots on the first team.
Leading to her Rookie of the Year billing, Misko closed out the regular season with 13 points on six goals and one assist. Her point total ranks third on the team and is the most by a Bucknell freshman since Faust tallied 18 in her debut campaign. Misko's six goals were also tied for second among Bison. The Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Sept. 27, Misko recorded the first game-winning goal of her career against Cornell earlier that month.
Bruvik is one of five unanimous selections to the first team. The senior co-captain led Bucknell with nine goals and 23 points while ranking second on the squad in assists with five. All three totals are career highs for the first-time honoree. Bruvik's name can also be found among the Patriot League's top 10 in points, goals, assists and game-winners this season.
In her final year in the Orange and Blue, Bruvik, who was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13, made major headway on the Bucknell record lists. With at least one game remaining in her career, she is tied for eighth in career goals (25), 12th in career points (57) and tied for 14th in single-season points (23).
Weiss earns her second all-league selection after being named to the second-team last year. The defender, who has started in all 72 games of her career, played a key role in holding Bison opponents to 11.9 shots and 2.83 goals per game this season. Opponents have also earned just 99 penalty corners on her watch, while Bucknell has totaled 130.
Weiss has also contributed greatly to Bucknell's offense. The senior has four goals for eight points on the year. She goes into the final stretch of her career with 11 goals, all of which have come in the last two seasons, seven assists and 29 points.
Kauffman makes her third consecutive appearance on the All-Patriot League Second Team. A senior forward, she is second on the team in goals (6) and points (14) this season. Kauffman tallied a pair of game-winners in non-conference play, and she also finished with a season-best four points against the Towson with a pair of goals, including the game-winner.
Kauffman solidified her place among some of Bucknell's best this year, improving to seventh all-time in points (68). She is also third in career assists (28) and 14th in career goals (20).
Siegrist closed the books on the regular season ranked among the team's top five in points (10), goals (3) and assists (4). Her first goal of the campaign came in the Bison's season-opener at Temple. She later succeeded on the squad's lone penalty shot, netting her second score opposite Towson. The sophomore's contributions extended beyond the offensive, however. Like her defensive line mate Weiss, Siegrist helped Bucknell record one of the league's best goals against averages while leading the Bison to four shut outs.
Although it is her first selection to an All-Patriot League team, Siegrist now has back-to-back seasons with double-digit points. As a freshman, she finished the year with 11 points on three goals and five assists.
Joining Misko in the 2010 major awards were American's Christine Fingerhuth as the Offensive Player of the Year and Steve Jennings as Coach of the Year. Lafayette's Meghan Cicchi was voted the Defensive Player of the Year, and Colgate's Kirsten Lalli was the Goalkeeper of the Year.
Major awards and all-league selections are determined by a vote of Patriot League head coaches.
Bucknell finished the regular season with a record of 7-11 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League, earning the third seed in the league tournament. The Bison will face No. 2 Lafayette in the Patriot League semifinals at 1:45 p.m. on Friday in Washington, D.C. The championship game will pit the winner of Bucknell-Lafayette against the winner of American-Colgate at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
