PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman Mike Nicholson won the 200-yard individual medley and juniors Matthew Segar and Eric Sokolosky each picked up second-place finishes to lead the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team on the first day of the Frank Elm Rutgers Invitational Friday. The Bison ended the day in fourth place in the six-team field.
Nicholson had the strongest individual performance of any Bison, winning the 200 IM by 1.18 seconds over La Salle's Charlie Zettel. His time of 1:52.19 moved him into fourth place in the Bucknell record books. Nicholson already ranks in the top 10 in the 400 IM (5th) as well.
Segar posted his second-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:36.97, setting a season best by more than 10 seconds. He was one of four Bison to advance to the finals and finish in the top 24 in the 500 free. Jonathan Podniesinski was one of those four finalists. He placed eighth overall, but was third in the prelims, just one spot behind Segar, with a season-best time of 4:37.07.
Sokolosky claimed second in the 50 free, timing in with a season-best 20.73 seconds, just .24 off his career best that came at the 2009 Patriot League Championships.
Bucknell also had top-five finishes in the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay.
Day two of the Rutgers Invitational gets underway Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the prelims. The finals commence at 5:30 p.m. The three-day event then ends on Sunday.
