PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Christian Barreiro scored 1:38 into overtime to lift Penn to a 1-0 win over Bucknell in an NCAA Tournament first-round game Thursday night at Rhodes Field. The Bison, who were coming off their third Patriot League championship in five years, suffered a rare shutout and finished the season 10-9-2.
Penn, the Ivy League runner-up behind Princeton, improved to 13-5-0 and will now face No. 2 national seed Maryland on Sunday evening.
Bucknell had scored in 74 of its last 77 matches dating back to the 2007 season and had been blanked only once this season, but after some good early chances, the Bison offense was held mostly in check.
It was an evenly played first half, with Bucknell having the better of play early followed by a late Penn surge. The Bison earned a couple of early corner kicks, but nothing came of them. Tommy McCabe, Brendan Burgdorf and Travis Rand all popped shots on goal, but Ben Berg was there each time.
Just inside 21 minutes remaining in the first half, Marc Hartmann made a terrific diving save on an 18-yard shot by Nick Unger. Eight minutes later Hartmann made a sprawling save to smother a low shot by Loukas Tasigianis.
With just 1:20 left in the half, Nader Sawtarie made a slide in the penalty area to break up a through pass, and then on the ensuing corner kick Thomas Brandt sent a header well over the crossbar.
After one of the only hints of confusion on the back line all night, Hartmann made another scintillating save in the 69th minute, diving to his right to deflect away a hard left-footed shot by Tasigianis.
The Bison held off some late Penn pressure at the end of regulation, but the Quakers tallied the game-winner just after the start of sudden-death. The sequence began on a long throw-in from the left side, Bucknell tried to clear the ball out of the box, but Barreiro jumped on the second ball from his midfield position and fired a low shot past Hartmann into the back of the net.
Penn finished with a 13-6 shot advantage. Hartmann made six saves, while Berg had four for Penn in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The loss marked the end of the line for Bucknell's winningest senior class. Tommy McCabe, Ross Liberati and Travis Rand will graduate with 44 victories, one more than the class of 2010.
Bucknell was bidding for its third straight trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, the Bison defeated George Mason in overtime in round one, and last season they dispatched Princeton 1-0. Bucknell is now 3-6 in six all-time NCAA trips.
