Bucknell Men's Soccer Settles for 2-2 Draw at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. - Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./Pingry School) and Luke Joyner (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) scored second-half goals to put Bucknell in front, but Tom Van Grinsven hit the next with 54 seconds left in regulation to help host Holy Cross salvage a 2-2 tie in a Patriot League men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Smith Stadium. It was Bucknell's first draw since Oct. 1, 2008, and the Bison are now 4-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.
Bucknell starting goalkeeper Marc Hartmann (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen's) left with an injury six minutes into the game, and just 10 minutes later Monty Sanders put the Crusaders (3-6-2, 0-2-1) ahead with a shot from about 30 yards away.
It remained a 1-0 game at the half, but just 90 seconds into the second period Bucknell equalized when Joyner settled a corner kick in heavy traffic and got it to Burgdorf, who finished his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Tommy Caso (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh) saved a Tony Rosales penalty kick in the 68th minute to keep it a 1-1 game, and then Bucknell took its first lead of the match only 1:27 later. CK Kumah (Accrah, Ghana/Hotchkiss School) dropped a pass for Joyner, who scored from inside the penalty area on the right side, his second goal of the season.
Bucknell could not finish it off, however, as Holy Cross converted in the final minute on a re-start after a Bison foul. Pat McCann assisted on Van Grinsven's second goal of the season.
In the first overtime Bucknell had a corner kick, and Holy Cross keeper Evan Polanik made a save on a shot by Tommy McCabe (Sarasota, Fla./Winter Park). Both teams had corner kicks in the final 15-minute OT period, but nothing came of it.
Caso finished with seven saves in 104 minutes of relief action, while Polanik had nine saves for the Crusaders. Holy Cross finished with a 16-15 shot advantage and benefitted from a 16-3 foul differential. Bucknell had 10 corner kicks to three for Holy Cross.
Bucknell plays its next four games at home, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. against Army.
