PISCATAWAY, N.J. - After 60 minutes of scoreless action, momentum turned against Bucknell field hockey resulting in a 3-0 loss to Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J., on Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights tallied each of their goals during a seven-minute stretch, dropping the Bison's record to 6-11 overall.
Bucknell's defense held Rutgers (8-10) without a shot in the first half and ultimately held the edge in the category, 10-6, at the final buzzer. The Bison also led in penalty corners, 5-3. Those advantages failed to pay off, however, as Bucknell was shut out for the second straight game.
Despite their slow start, the Scarlet Knights cashed in late on their scoring opportunities. Christie Morad broke up the scoreless tie by finally getting a ball past the keeper following a penalty corner with 9:26 remaining in the game. Three minutes later, Lisa Patrone made the score 2-0 with a shot low and to the left. Almost four minutes after that, Rutgers put the final goal on the board on a shot from Gia Nappi. Nappi finished the game with four points, having also assisted on her team's first two goals.
Bison goalkeeper Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary) saw her record drop to 6-10 on the year after allowing all three goals and making one save. Sarah Stuby earned the win for Rutgers after making four stops. MacKenzie Noda also tallied two defensive saves.
Bucknell will return home for its final game of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30. The Bison will host Colgate at 12 p.m. at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium. Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day), Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor), Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) and Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) will be recognized prior to the game for Senior Day.
