LEWISBURG, Pa. - Two weeks after opening their seasons with an unscored meet at UMBC, the Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be in the pool for two road meets this weekend. Both Bison squads will face George Mason Saturday at 1 p.m. Less than 24 hours later they will be back in the pool at George Washington. Both meets will be scored.
Bucknell's men posted seven first-place finishes in the season opener at UMBC two weeks ago. Junior Jonathan Podniesinski posted three first-place finishes, while freshman Mike Nicholson won both the 200- and 400-yard individual medley. His time of 4 minutes, 5.37 seconds in the 400 IM placed him eighth in the Bison record books.
Bucknell last year faced George Mason at the same juncture in the season and posted a 166-132 victory at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison were last scheduled to face George Washington in January 2004, but the meet was cancelled.
The Bucknell women had a good mix of veterans and rookies lead them at UMBC as senior co-captains Molly Goebel (100 free, 200 free) and Macey Keath (200 breast) accounted for three of the team's seven individual victories. Freshmen Kelly Pontecorvo (500 free, 1,000 free) and Emily Wright (50 free) combined for three other wins, while sophomore diver Lisa Bolle posted a winning score off the one-meter board.
Like the men's squad, Bucknell's women squared off with George Mason last October at Kinney Natatorium and collected a 185-115 victory.
Following this weekend's competition, the Bison will be on the road only two more times all season - Nov. 19-21 at the Rutgers Invitational and Jan. 16 at Columbia.
Both Bucknell teams will be back in action in two weeks when they host American, Lafayette and Navy in a quad meet at Kinney Natatorium on Saturday, Nov. 6.
