LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team moved into a first-place tie in the Patriot League standings over the weekend thanks in large part to a 1-0 shutout victory over Navy, the league's highest scoring team coming in. A key player in the win was sophomore Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook), who earned Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week honors on Monday.
McDermott finished with five saves, three in the first half and two in the second, en route to her second career shutout and first in Patriot League play.
Bucknell scored just 1:42 into the game on a goal by Caitlin Holtz, and then the defense made the early tally stand up. Navy came into the game with a league-high 33 goals, and the Mids had been 8-0-2 in their 10 previous Patriot League home games.
McDermott is in her first season as Bucknell's starting goalkeeper, and in 15 games she has a .771 save percentage, with 81 saves and 24 goals against. She ranks third in the Patriot League in saves per game.
With three conference games remaining, the Bison are 3-1 and tied for first place with Lehigh with nine points apiece. Army is a close third with eight points, while Navy and Colgate have six each. The top four teams in the eight-team table qualify for the Patriot League Tournament.
All three of Bucknell's remaining matches will be at home, beginning Friday with a critical showdown with Army at 8 p.m. at Holmes Stadium. That game will air live on Bison Vision at BucknellBison.com
