Holtz's Early Goal Helps Bucknell Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Caitlin Holtz (Freehold, N.J./Peddie School) scored her fourth goal of the season just 1:42 into the game, and the Bucknell defense shut down the Patriot League's highest scoring team in a 1-0 victory Saturday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. It was a big three points for the Bison, who improved to 3-1 in the league and temporarily took over first place, pending Army's result against Lafayette later in the day.
Navy came into the game with 33 goals in 16 matches, the most in the conference, and the Mids had been 8-0-2 in their last 10 home games spanning three seasons. But the Bison took control of the game after earning a corner kick in the opening minutes of the contest.
Holtz sent a short corner kick to Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./Shipley School) on the right side, and Stokes played it back to Holtz. The senior midfielder then tried to cross the ball into the box, and it sailed over goalkeeper Hannah Legler into the net.
Holtz entered her senior year with three career goals, but now she has four this season, second-most on the team behind Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport), who has five.
Bison keeper Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) made five saves en route to her second shutout of the season.
Navy had a 10-7 edge on the shot board, while Bucknell led in corner kicks 6-3. The last of Navy's corners came in the final two minutes of the game, but the Bison were able to clear.
Legler made two saves for Navy, which fell to 9-7-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the Patriot League.
Entering the weekend, Army led the Patriot League with seven points, while Bucknell, Navy and Lehigh all had six. Later on Saturday, Army travels to Lafayette, and Lehigh hosts Holy Cross.
This was the 20th meeting between Bucknell and Navy, and it was Bucknell's second shutout in series history, with the other coming in 2007. The Mids lead the series 11-8-1, but the Bison are now 5-4-1 in Annapolis.
Bucknell begins a three-game homestand on Friday against Army at 7 p.m. at Emmitt Field.
