LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kielan Crow scored on a man-up goal with 11 seconds left in the fourth quarter to break an 11-11 deadlock and give Johns Hopkins a 12-11 victory over Bucknell in men's water polo action on Friday night at Kinney Natatorium. Jack Else (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) led the Bison with three goals apiece.
The ending to the game was similar to the meeting between the teams three weeks ago in Baltimore. In that contest, the Blue Jays' Ross Schofield tallied the winning score in a 13-12 win with two seconds remaining on the clock.
Bucknell (7-9, 0-5 CWPA Southern Division) battled back from an 11-7 deficit to tie the score at 11-11 with 2:06 remaining in the game. Fourth-quarter reserve goalie Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) then made an acrobatic save of a shot from Mark Strickland with just over a minute to play, keeping the score tied, and giving the Bison a chance to take the lead in the final minute.
Moments after his shot, Strickland was whistled for an ejection, but he never left the playing area, giving the Bison a penalty shot. Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)), who ranks seventh on Bucknell's all-time goals list, lined up to take the penalty shot, but it was saved by Jeremy Selbst. Selbst, Johns Hopkins' normal starter who didn't arrive at Kinney Natatorium until the second quarter, played only in the fourth quarter after freshman Chance Fowler had a strong showing over the first three quarters in his place.
The game featured a number of six-on-five situations as Bucknell drew a season-high 16 ejections and was whistled for 11. The Bison ended up 6-for-14 in six-on-fives, while Johns Hopkins (10-9, 2-2 CWPA Southern Division) was 6-for-9 and converted a pair of penalty shots. Fifteen of the 23 goals in the contest came in man-up situations or on penalty shots.
Bucknell never led in the game, although it did force five ties. The Blue Jays' largest lead was two goals until they netted three straight scores midway through the third quarter to extend their advantage to 11-7.
The Bison held Johns Hopkins scoreless for more than 10 minutes before Crow came through with the game winner, his second score of the game. During that span Bucknell scored four times, three coming in six-on-five situations.
Napleton, who played only the fourth quarter, registered three saves in his limited playing time. Starter Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) tallied four saves for Bucknell.
In addition to his three goals, Barron won all four sprints, recorded two steals and drew a pair of ejections.
Outside of Else and Barron, Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) was the only other Bison to post a multi-goal outing with two scores. He crossed the 200-point plateau for his career and now has 202.
Alex Whittam and Schofield were Johns Hopkins' top offensive players. Whittam netted five goals and dished out one assist, while Schofield contributed two goals and three assists for a five-point night.
Bucknell will continue its busy weekend with a pair of games on Saturday. The Bison will host No. 18 Navy at 12 p.m. and George Washington at 5:30 p.m. Bucknell will wrap up its weekend with a 1 p.m. game Sunday opposite No. 17 Princeton that will be broadcast live on Bison Vision.
