BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bucknell men's cross country struggled with its daunting task at the competitive Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday morning. The Bison finished 40th as a team, led by Joshua Clark (Vincentown, N.J./Seneca) in the Gold Race with an eight-kilometer time of 25 minutes, 44 seconds.
Clark earned his best finish in his final opportunity at the Paul Short Invitational. The senior placed 189th overall, less than a minute ahead of his closest teammate. Charles Murphy (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) regained his spot among the varsity seven by finishing second on the squad. Also a senior, Murphy finished 207th with a time of 25:56.
Rounding out the top five for the Bison were Robert Yamnicky (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), Chris Sacks (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) and Christopher Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton).
In the open race, Michael and Timothy Ryan (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) were the top two Bucknell finishers. Michael was 41st overall with a time of 26:26 at 8K, while Timothy was 51st at 26:32.
Claiming the individual title in the Gold Race was Liberty's Sam Chelanga (23:34). Virginia, which was ranked 22nd nationally, earned the team victory with 132 points. Bucknell's 40th-place finish as a team came with 1,071 points.
Bucknell will be back in action on Oct. 16 for Pre-Nationals hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. Races begin at 11 a.m.
