LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis earned its first honor of the season as Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) was named the Patriot League Player of the Month for September on Friday. Bernstein opened his career in the Orange and Blue with a combined record of 12-1 through two tournaments.
At the UConn Invitational last weekend, Bernstein earned a spot in the finals of both his singles and doubles draws. The freshman won the doubles title with classmate Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills), bringing his record to 6-1 on the year. The rookie duo also advanced to the championship round at the Northeast Intercollegiate earlier in the month to give them one of the best starts on the team.
Bernstein followed up a singles title at the Northeast Intercollegiate by qualifying for the Flight C Singles final at Connecticut. The success at his most recent tournament gave him his sixth straight win and allowing him to stay undefeated. The final, in which he is scheduled to face teammate Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye), was postponed first due to darkness and then by rain. It will be played later this fall.
Bernstein's 12-1 combined record leads the team this fall. His 6-0 singles mark is also tied with Morque for a team-best as is his and Rosen's 6-1 tally in doubles.
The Player of the Month honor is the first of Bernstein's career and the fourth all-time for a Bison. He also becomes the first Bison to earn the Patriot League's monthly award since Ira Reibeisen in October of 2007 and the first Bison freshman since Zach Hascoe in September 2006.
Bernstein and his teammates will be back on the court this weekend for the Bucknell Invitational. Play begins today at 3 p.m. and runs through Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
