LEWISBURG, Pa. - Jonathan Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), Matthew Segar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) each won two swimming events and David Magaro (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) swept the diving events as the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team defeated Colgate 192-96 Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium. The win improved the Bison's record to 4-2 overall and 3-1 against Patriot League competition.
Bucknell swept the top three spots in five different events and won the first 14 events before swimming exhibitions in the 400-yard individual medley and 400 freestyle relay to close the meet. The Bison also claimed at least two of the top three spots in every swimming event.
Podniesinski's two wins came in the 1,650 free and 200 breaststroke. His time of 16 minutes, 43.39 seconds in the 1,650 free led three Bucknell swimmers in the top four, while his winning time of 2:14.63 placed him ahead of teammates Brett Carey (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) and Nathaniel Frye (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area), who took second and third, respectively. Both also had top-three showings in the 100 breast, with Frye picking up the victory.
Sokolosky dominated the sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 free (21.40) and 100 free (47.15). He now has six total first-place finishes in those two events this season. Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) and Christian Treat (Evergreen, Colo./Clear Creek) both also scored in both with that trio sweeping the first three spots in the 100 free.
Segar was strong in the longer-distance freestyles, winning the 200 free (1:44.02) and 500 free (4:52.61). Treat took second in the 200 free, marking one of his two top-three finishes on the day.
In addition to sweeping the 100 free and 200 breast, the Bison also claimed 1-2-3 in the 200 butterfly and the 100 and 200 backstrokes.
Other swimming winners for Bucknell included Billy Krause (200 fly), Gonzalo DeLeon (200 back), Taylor Harris (100 fly), Fletcher (100 back) and the 200 medley relay of Harris, Frye, Michael Volpe Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Sokolosky.
Magaro, the Bison's lone diver, continued his strong freshman campaign sweeping both the one-meter (230.10) and three-meter (258.53) boards.
Bucknell will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 16, when it travels to West Point, N.Y., to face Army at 1 p.m.
