LEWISBURG, Pa. - Colgate outscored Bucknell 29-7 in the final two swimming events as the Bison women's swimming and diving team lost to the Raiders 156-142 Saturday afternoon at Lineberry Natatorium. The 14-point loss for Bucknell was its closest against defending Patriot League champion Colgate since defeating the Raiders 178-117 during the 2004-05 campaign.
Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) posted victories in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and Allison FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal Acaemy) swept the diving events for Bucknell, which also set two pool records during the meet. Overall, the Bison claimed first in seven of the 16 events.
The 200-medley relay squad of Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen), Morgan Oxley (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), Goebel and Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) set the pool record with a winning time of 1 minute, 47.02 seconds. Warren broke her second pool record of the day, winning the 100 backstroke in 57.14 to surpass a mark that had stood since 2001.
In addition to her record-breaking performances, Warren finished fourth in the 100 free and was part of the 400 free relay quartet that finished second in 3:32.83, placing it ninth on Bucknell's all-time list.
Goebel led a trio of Bison in the top four of both the 50 free and 100 free as Bucknell finished 1-2-4 in both events. Following Goebel in the 50 free was Abigail Atkinson (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and Lauren Timmmerman (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon), while Mongan and Warren crossed the line shortly after Goebel in the 100. Goebel also finished third in the 100 butterfly, Bucknell's only scorer in the event.
Atkinson joined Goebel and Warren as Bucknell's only individual winners in the pool, finishing first in the 200 free in 1:55.98. Mongan, who recorded two runner-up finishes and was part of both relays, finished second, less than a second behind.
Freshman Anna Griest (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster School) had a strong day in the distance free events, finishing second in both the 500 and 1,650. Her time of 17:37.85 in the 1,650 free was a season best.
Lauren Russell (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) was another Bison who posted a solid day as she scored in the 100 and 200 back as well as the 400 individual medley. Her best finish was the runner-up showing in the 200 back, and event where she was Bucknell's top finisher.
FitzPatrick was the Bison's top diver Saturday, picking up 18 team points thanks to her sweep. It marked the first time she won off the one-meter board this season, while she now has four victories off the three-meter board.
Bucknell (5-2, 2-2 Patriot League) will be back in action next Saturday at Army. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. at Crandall Pool.
