BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Freshman diver David Magaro (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) swept the diving events and Bucknell outscored Lehigh 23-13 over the final two events, but it was not enough as the Bison men's swimming and diving team fell to the Mountain Hawks 166.5-131.5 Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Bucknell wrapped up the dual-meet portion of its schedule with a 4-5 overall mark, including 3-3 against Patriot League opponents.
Bucknell kept the meet close because of its depth. The Bison earned just four first-place finishes in the 12 individual swimming events, but they had two of the top three finishers in five additional events.
Magaro shined in the diving competition, winning the three-meter board by nearly 30 points with a score of 244.43. The one-meter board was closer, but Magaro still posted a victory of nearly 20 points with a score of 229.13.
Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) joined Magaro with two victories as he won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 free. He was one of three Bison scorers in the 50 free, winning in 21.78 seconds. In the 100 free, he was the only Bucknell finisher in the top four places as he tied for first with Lehigh's Frank Cuzzola with matching 47.42 times. Sokolosky was also part of the runner-up 200 medley relay and first-place 400 free relay squads.
Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) led a 1-3-4 Bucknell showing in the 200 back, while Billy Krause (Huntington Bay, N.Y./St. Anthony's) won the 400 individual medley, accounting for the only other Bison victories Saturday. Fletcher added a second-place finish in the 100 back and a third-place showing in the 50 free as he contributed 16 points to Bucknell's total. Krause was Bucknell's top finisher in the 200 fly, placing second.
While he did not pick up a first-place finish, Jonathan Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) tallied eight points for the Bison with a second-place finish in the 1,000 free, a third-place showing in the 200 breast and a fifth-place finish in the 400 IM. He was the team's top finisher in both the 1,000 free and 200 breast.
The Bison will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 30, when they travel to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Invitational. That meet will wrap up the regular season and will serve as a tune-up for the Patriot League Championships, which will take place at Navy next month.
