Having campus all to ourselves and a few other sports teams, having no homework or classes, and being able to simply eat, sleep and swim, has been quite peaceful and delightful. These past three weeks have served for some quality bonding time: we watched our fair share of movies on couches and in theaters; we had a team gift exchange complete with fresh-baked cookies (Thanks Meggie!); we snuggled up together on couches to watch the first episode of The Real World, American Idol and The Bachelor; and each class year has had their turn at decorating the locker room for a swim meet. As a girls team, we have also started crafting shirts, blankets, towels and knick-knacks for our Secret Psych to be revealed the night before our championship meet. In addition to the team bonding and intense training, we found some time and energy to visit the Riverwoods retirement home to play Bingo with the residents, as well as assist with the Jr. Bison Club Party after the men's basketball game against American.
Although I have thoroughly enjoyed my time alone on campus with my teammates, I have to say I was a bit relieved to see some other students returning these past few days. The return of "the others" is like when the trees start budding in the spring, it brings a new air of excitement and energy. It's a cue for a new semester, for new challenges, and for the quickly approaching Patriot League Champs (only 33 days!). The approach of championships means taper time is near, and every swimmer knows that taper is the very best time of year.
