PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A shorthanded Bucknell women's soccer team fell 1-0 Sunday afternoon when Duquesne's Samantha Kaiser scored an unassisted goal with three minutes remaining in double overtime. Sophomore Colleen Garrehy (Danville, Calif./Carondelet), subbing for injured starter Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area), made a career-high 10 saves in goal for the Bison, who also played without Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area).
Bucknell battled hard and played outstanding defensively in this one. Garrehy was tested early, making three saves in the first 18 minutes, then two more late in the first half. She made another big stop on Morgan Herbert with 10 minutes left in regulation, then another on Paige Maroney with just over a minute left in the first overtime period.
Bucknell registered three of its 11 shots in that first overtime period. Casey Crowley (Hamilton Square, N.J./The Peddie School) and Megan DeGennaro (Westlake Village, Calif./La Reina) both had attempts turned aside by Duquesne keeper Gabby Morrin, and with about 50 seconds remaining Kayla Yee (Centennial, Colo./Heritage) sent a header wide of the frame.
The Dukes (2-3) controlled play in the second extra stanza. They had three corner kicks, one of which led to Herbert hitting a post with a header. Finally, in the 107th minute, Kaiser punched one in to send the home team off victorious.
Duquesne finished with an 18-11 shot advantage and took all six of the game's corner kicks.
Now 1-3 on the season, the Bison play at home on Wednesday night, taking on Saint Francis (Pa.) at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium at 7 p.m.
