ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Nine Bison tallied goals and the entire roster saw action as the Bucknell men's water polo team split a pair of games on Sunday to wrap up the weekend-long Navy Open. The Bison, who are ranked 18th nationally, dropped their opener to No. 4 California by a 20-6 margin, but bounced back to defeat Fordham 15-9 later in the day.
Bucknell (2-2) followed a similar pattern to Saturday when it lost its season opener 22-7 to No. 2 Stanford and then knocked off Gannon 13-4.
Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)), who had a team-best 17 points in the four games over the weekend, totaled nine points Sunday alone. He registered one goal and one assist against Cal and then totaled two goals and four assists opposite the Rams. He now has 226 points in his career and is just 11 assists shy of the century mark for his career.
Freshman Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick), who notched at least one goal in each of the four weekend games, netted a goal against Cal and two more in the nightcap when he earned his first career start. The rookie also drew four ejections Sunday.
All three goalies on the Bison roster saw action Sunday as senior Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) and junior Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) split time against Cal, with Gilhuly earning the start. Donahue, who has stopped four shots in each game this season, started against Fordham with Gilhuly and freshman Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) splitting time in the second half.
Against Cal, Bucknell spread its offense around as six different players found the back of the net. However, no one tallied more than one goal and the Bears sprinted out to a 9-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Bison did play Cal even in the second quarter, but the Bears outscored Bucknell 9-3 after halftime.
Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) led the Bison offensive attack against Fordham with a career-high four goals. Eight different Bucknell players netted goals in the contest with Hyden, Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy andover), Barron and Reamey posting multiple-goal outings. The Bison clung to a slim 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Rams 11-4 in the middle two periods for a commanding victory over a team they are now 32-2 against all-time.
Sunday's meeting marked the sixth straight year Bucknell and Cal have squared off at the season-opening Navy Open. The Bears are 6-0 in those meetings and 23-0 all-time at the Navy Open. This year they outscored their four opponents by a whopping 75-18 margin.
The Bison will now prepare for next weekend's Princeton Open, the first of two consecutive weekends the Bison will compete at DeNunzio Pool. Bucknell will face MIT, No. 17 Brown, Iona and No. 3 UCLA at the two-day event.
