PRINCETON, N.J. – A late comeback by the 20th-ranked Bucknell men's water polo team fell short Saturday afternoon as the Bison dropped a close 7-6 decision to No. 19 Brown at the Princeton Invitational. Bucknell outscored Brown 5-1 after halftime, including a 4-0 showing in the fourth quarter.
The Bison had a chance to tie the game in the closing minute, but came up empty on a possession with 27 seconds remaining as they fell to 1-1 on the day and 3-3 on the season. Bucknell is now 0-3 against ranked opponents this year, but 3-0 opposite unranked foes.
Six different players registered one goal apiece for Bucknell as Spencer Richley (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor), Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)), Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover), Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) each found the back of the net once. Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) also contributed a team-high two assists.
The Bison struggled early as Brown jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the first quarter. The Bucknell defense clamped down and limited the Bears to just two goals over the final 24 minutes. Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) played the second half in cage in relief of starter Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and yielded just one goal against a season-high six saves.
Stupp was strong in front of the goalies with four steals.
Bucknell will wrap up play at the Princeton Invitational on Sunday with games against Iona (8 a.m.) and No. 4 UCLA (3:30 p.m.).
