PRINCETON, N.J. – Facing its third top-five team of the young season, the 20th-ranked Bucknell men's water polo team wrapped up the Princeton Invitational Sunday afternoon with a 15-3 loss to No. 4 UCLA. The Bison went 2-2 at the weekend event, having defeated Iona earlier in the day.
Bucknell (4-4), which yielded at least 20 goals to top-five teams Stanford and Cal last week at the Navy Open, held UCLA to just six first-half goals. In fact, the Bruins tallied just one goal with senior starter Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) in goal. Donahue played just the first quarter and was not called upon to make a save. Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) took over in the second quarter and freshman Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) played the entire second half and stopped a season-high five shots.
Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes), Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) each netted a goal for the Bison. Kalter's goal brought his Sunday point tally to a team-best five after registering two goals and a pair of assists earlier in the day against Iona.
Bucknell, which is 0-4 against ranked opponents this year and 4-0 opposite unranked foes, did earn nine 6-on-5 opportunities, while UCLA had just one.
Bucknell will return to Princeton's DeNunzio Pool next weekend for the ECAC Championship. The Bison's first game will be against conference rival Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon at 12:45 p.m.
