Bucknell Men's Water Polo Splits Two Games on First Day of Navy Open

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell men's water polo team opened its 2009 season Saturday at the Navy Open and split a pair of games. The Bison lost their opener to No. 2 Stanford by a 22-7 margin, but bounced back with a 13-4 victory in the nightcap against Gannon. Richie Hyden led the Bucknell offense on the day with seven goals and a pair of assists.
Bison second-year head coach John Abdou used his entire roster in both games as Bucknell has two more games on Sunday against No. 4 California and Fordham.
The Bison had a tough opening game against the highly ranked Cardinal as they trailed 6-0 at the end of the first quarter and 11-2 at the half. They did bounce back to net four goals in the third quarter and one more in the fourth. Hyden totaled three goals in the contest, while Andrew Nelson added two.
Nick Donahue started both games in goal. Against Stanford he registered four saves and he added two more against Gannon. Miles Gilhuly played the second half against the Cardinal and had two saves, while freshman Matt Napleton made his first career appearance and stopped four shots opposite Gannon.
The Bison had a solid contest in the nightcap, jumping out to a 6-1 halftime lead. Hyden totaled four goals and a pair of assists, while Sean Coghlan, Spencer Richley and Howie Kalter netted two scores apiece.
