Sept. 30, 2009
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bison men's and women's tennis will host their first combined event this weekend, welcoming four other schools to Lewisburg for the Bucknell Invitational. Play begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 4. Friday's action has been canceled due to bad weather forecasted.
Joining Bucknell in action this weekend are Fairleigh Dickinson, Connecticut, George Mason and Patriot League foe Colgate. The Bison already have a bit of history this year with four of these teams having seen them at least once at a previous tournament. The lone exception is George Mason.
In the event of rain, play will continue indoors on Bucknell's Fieldhouse Courts.
MEN'S NOTEBOOK
- Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) came away the big winner for the Bison at the UConn Invitational last weekend. The freshman went 4-0 in singles action to win the Flight C title. Katten defeated opponents from Bryant twice, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac to claim his first career title.
- Katten and classmate Ryan Marcil (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) lead the team in singles wins this fall with seven apiece. Both have 7-3 records, which also gives them the squad's top winning percentage at .700.
- Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) has posted a 4-2 doubles record so far this season. Each of those matches came while teamed with Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)). While the Bison are still testing their doubles combinations, those four wins are the most of any duo.
WOMEN'S NOTEBOOK
- Bucknell has two current players in the top 10 in total career wins. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) has amassed 105 such victories and with two more wins in either singles or doubles, the senior will advance to sixth place all-time in Bucknell program history. Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) is now ninth all-time with 93 wins.
- Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends Academy) and Lucido lead the Bison with eight singles wins apiece. Iepuras has a fall record of 8-2, while Lucido comes in at 8-3.
- Two Bison currently have .700 career winning percentages or better, and a third is on the doorstep of joining the club. At 105-45, Varela is at .700, while Iepuras sits at .714 with a 35-14 record. Lucido is within striking distance at .699 (93-40).
