2009-10 Women's Basketball Tentative Schedule
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's basketball has announced its tentative schedule for the 2009-10 season. The campaign kicks off with an early-season tournament at Iona beginning Saturday, Nov. 14. The Bison then return to Sojka Pavilion for four consecutive games, leading off with Penn State in their home opener on Thursday, Nov. 19.
The Bison open their schedule at the two-day Iona Tip-Off Tournament. Joining Iona and Bucknell at the tournament are Arizona and Miami (Ohio).
Bucknell's first and longest homestand of the season begins with Penn State, which has been designated as an Orange Out game. The Bison will follow the contest with the Nittany Lions by hosting Fordham at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, a day filled with Bucknell athletics. Bison football will take on Holy Cross at 1 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, and the men's basketball squad will play Saint Francis (Pa.) at Sojka Pavilion following the women's game.
The non-league home schedule will continue with Loyola (Md.) (Nov. 24) and UMBC (Nov. 29).
The Bison fell to Penn State and Loyola on the road last year, but defeated Fordham in Brooklyn. The matchup with UMBC will be the first since a Bucknell victory in 1998.
Seven of Bucknell's next eight games will be played on the road, with only Yale breaking up the road trip on Saturday, Dec. 5. The Orange and Blue will take on Niagara (Dec. 2), Towson (Dec. 7) and Drexel (Dec. 21) away from the friendly confines of Sojka Pavilion. The new year continues with Buffalo (Jan. 3) and Cornell (Jan. 6) to round out the non-conference slate.
Bucknell played each of those teams last season, with the exception of Niagara, earning a 4-2 record. Bucknell and Niagara last met in 2000, with Bucknell taking a 23-point win.
Bucknell's Patriot League schedule gets under way on Friday, Jan. 8 in Annapolis, Md., when the team takes on Navy. A game at American on Wednesday, Jan. 13 caps off the road stretch before the Bison return to Sojka Pavilion for three straight contests featuring Holy Cross (Jan. 16), Lafayette (Jan. 20) and Colgate (Jan. 23). Bucknell's league slate at home concludes with back-to-back games against Navy (Feb. 6) and American (Feb. 10), followed by Lehigh (Feb. 24) and Army (Feb. 27).
The Orange and Blue returns to the road one more time for the Patriot League Tournament with the first two rounds played at Holy Cross beginning Saturday, March 6. The championship game is set for Wednesday, March 10 at the site of the higher remaining seed.
Bucknell finished in a tie for third in the Patriot League last year. The team fell to Navy in the quarterfinals of the league tournament.
