LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) won her second consecutive Bucknell Invitational Flight A Singles title on Sunday morning, defeating Ana Mungo of Duquesne, 3-6, 6-1, 10-7. Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) also won her singles match, taking fifth place in Flight A by defeating Hofstra's Lauren Clifton 0-6, 6-1, 10-2.
Lucido took her match to a 10-point tiebreak for the third time against her Duquesne opponent. Like her semifinal outing, the first set proved to be a bit rocky. The 3-6 loss did not slow the junior down, however, as she came back strong in the second. Lucido broke Mungo in her first few service games to take an early lead. Lucido took the second set convincingly at 6-1, forcing a super tiebreak to decide the match.
After getting out to a 4-2 lead in the super tiebreak, Mungo came back to tie it at 5-5 and again at 7-7. The two players then battled through a seemingly endless rally with Lucido coming out on top for 8-7. Lucido hit a drop shot that nicked the net cord for 9-7 before closing out the championship match for her second Bucknell Invitational title at 10-7.
With the win, Lucido improves her singles record this fall to 6-0, including 4-0 this weekend.
Iepuras was also pushed the distance in her battle for fifth place. The sophomore lost in her first round match but had cruised through back portion of the draw since then. It was a tale of two sets in her final as Iepuras failed to hold serve in the first, and Clifton was able to hold only once. Iepuras then eased to the win by a comfortable 10-2 in the super tiebreak.
With the close of their home tournament, the Bison will now begin preparations for the Eastern Championships. The tournament runs Friday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 27 in West Point, N.Y.
