Bucknell Women's Tennis Starts Strong at Home Inivtational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's tennis got off to a strong start on the first day of the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday. Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) advanced to the third round of doubles and seven Bison will play in the second round of singles in their home tournament tomorrow.
Dwojewski and Iepuras faced little resistance in either of their Flight B doubles matches. The duo began with an 8-1 defeat of the team from Colgate, followed by an 8-3 win over their opponents from George Mason later in the day.
Jennie Ciotti (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and Liz Larkin (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) had a little more difficult time in doubles, starting with an 8-7 win over Colgate. The pair from George Mason got the better of them in the second round, however, knocking out the Bison team 8-1.
In singles action, Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), Dwojewski, Larkin and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) won their first round matches. Lucido, Larkin and Calcaterra had an easy go of it, defeating their opponents in straight sets, but Dwojewski had to battle to pull out her first singles win of the year. The junior lost the first set 6-4 to Fairleigh Dickinson's Chernyshova. Dwojewski came storming back in the second for a 6-2 win. The two players then went the distance in the super tiebreak. Dwojewski came out on top in the end, winning 11-9.
Having been seeded in the top two in their respective draws, Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy), Iepuras and Ciotti each advanced to the second round with byes.
