LEWISBURG, Pa. - Jasmine Riley registered two goals and an assist to lead Virginia Commonwealth to a 3-0 victory over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison dropped their second straight contest on the heels of a three-game winning streak and fell to 4-5 on the season.
Bucknell had the time-of-possession edge in the first half but could not muster many quality scoring chances. The best came with about eight minutes left, when freshman Kayla Yee (Centennial, Colo./Heritage) just missed the far post. VCU nearly scored with three minutes left in the half after Riley got behind a defender and fed Heather Hovanesian, but the shot also barely went wide.
Bucknell outshot VCU (4-3-1) 6-3 in a scoreless first half, but things changed early in the second. This time the Riley-to-Hovanesian combo worked at the other end of the field just 2:21 into the period. Riley beat two defenders to the end line and slipped a pass across the goal mouth to Hovenesian for a slam dunk near the back post.
Only 4:10 later it was 2-0 on a strong individual play by Riley. This time working along the right side, she fended off a defender with her body long enough to shake free and poke a shot past Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area).
The Rams defense, which was working on its fourth consecutive clean sheet, settled in and Bucknell never mounted a serious scoring threat the rest of the way. VCU put an exclamation point on the victory with just 22 seconds left in the game, when Riley redirected an Ashley Grant pass from point-blank range.
Sutton and her counterpart Kate Hudson made two saves each in a game that featured a total of only 19 shots, 10 for the Bison and nine for the Rams.
Bucknell returns to action on Wednesday night when Penn State visits Emmitt Field for a 7 p.m. start.
