LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey kicks off its 2009 home schedule with a pair of games this weekend. The Bison take on Vermont at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4 and Towson at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6 at Graham Field. Live stats on GameTracker will be available for both games at BucknellBison.com. Fans are encouraged to wear their Orange & Blue as part of College Colors Day.
Bucknell is 0-2 all-time against Vermont. The two teams last met in 2005 with the Catamounts coming out on top, 2-1 in overtime. The Bison lead Towson in the all-time series, 16-10, despite falling 2-1 last year. Bucknell started the game in strong fashion, getting an early goal from former student-athlete Katie Ruiz. The last time Bucknell was victorious over Towson was in 2007, 4-3 on its home turf.
ABOUT THE BISON
- Bucknell split its first two games last weekend, falling 2-0 to Albany last Saturday and beating Siena 6-1 the following day on the road. Austin Thomas (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) and Mallory Smith (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) each scored two goals in the win, and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) and Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) added a goal apiece. Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township), Kauffman and Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) each earned assists.
- With two goals on Sunday, Thomas recorded her first career multi-goal game. The senior entered the game with just two goals in her career. Smith's scores were the first of her career.
- With Raczek's assist on Thomas' first goal, the midfielder moved up Bucknell's career assists list. She now ranks fourth all-time with 18. Kaufman's assist gave her 16 in her career, placing her seventh all-time at Bucknell.
- Although it is still early in the season, another Bison is already on record watch. With 41 career points, Krebs is just five points shy of tying Sue Ramage '84 for a spot on Bucknell's top-15 list. Krebs also needs two more goals to tie Alex Kyzmir '06 with 17 career goals.
- In just over one season, Jeremy Cook has reached 12 wins in his career as the Bucknell head coach. Entering the weekend, he is two wins away from tying Cheryl Stockman for sixth on the program's career wins list.
ABOUT THE CATAMOUNTS
- Vermont is 0-2 this season, losing 3-0 to Boston College and 2-0 William & Mary at home. The contest with the Bison will be the first road game of the season for the Catamounts.
- The Catamounts lost three of their top four goal scorers from last season. Returning is Megan Maynard who recorded a team-best nine goals last season. Goalkeeper Kristen Heavens also returns after posting a 1.99 goals-against average, a .717 save percentage and three shutouts in 2008.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
- Towson is 1-1 in 2009 after dropping its season opener 1-0 to the University of California and defeating Pacific 3-2 last week, both on the road. Christina Boarman, Katie DiFilippo and Jamie Salvador each tallied a goal. Goalkeeper Jamie Dowling is 1-1 with four saves in the early goings.
- Boarman was the Tigers' top point-getter last year, posting 20 goals and 15 assists. Also returning from the 2008 campaign is the team's second-leading goal scorer, Mariah Schuette.
