LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) advanced to the Flight A singles championship match and the Bison totaled a dozen wins on day two of the Bucknell Invitational. Liz Larkin (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) also advanced to her Flight D singles championship match, playing to a runner-up finish.
Lucido increased her winning streak to five straight singles matches to qualify for the championship round for the second consecutive year. The junior won Flight A last year by defeating former teammate Paulina Gamboa. Lucido will have a chance at the repeat tomorrow when she goes up against Ana Mungo of Duquesne.
To get to the championship match, Lucido defeated her opponents from Villanova and Duquesne. The road was not smooth in her bid for another title, as she was forced to play a super tiebreak in each match after splitting the first two sets.
Larkin also defeated her opponent from Villanova, Sarah Kelly, 6-4 and 6-4 to reach her first title match. The sophomore had less luck in the final, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Mt. St. Mary's Emily Grugan.
The Bison were also successful in the back portion of the draw. Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) took fifth place in Flight D after defeating Dana Verona of Loyola (Md.) 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 and Emma Haley of Mt. St. Mary's 6-0 and 6-2.
Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) will go for fifth place in Flight A singles tomorrow. The reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year defeated opponents from Villanova and Mt. St. Mary's to reach the match.
Although the Bison saw a bit less success in doubles competition, they still pulled out a handful of victories. Lucido and partner Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) as well as Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) earned wins in doubles. They were joined by Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and Larkin who claimed a victory in Flight B.
The Bison return to their home courts tomorrow for the final day of the Bucknell Invitational. Play begins at 9 a.m.
