LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior Kelsey Johnson (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) earned Patriot League Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday after spearheading an outstanding team defensive effort in three Bison victories last week.
Johnson, who earned Patriot League weekly honors for the first time since garnering a Rookie of the Week award in 2007, was a big part of a Bucknell defense that allowed only one goal in three contests last week. The Bison allowed a first-half goal before rallying for a 2-1 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.), then they posted 1-0 road shutouts over Mount St. Mary's on Friday and Iona on Sunday. Those three opponents managed only 15 shots on frame.
Johnson is in her third year as a starting defender for the Bison, and she has never missed a match. After allowing seven goals in two contests to open the season, the Bucknell defense has yielded three in five games since then.
Bucknell has won four of those five games, including the three straight last week, and is now 4-3 on the season. The Bison have a pair of home tilts coming up this weekend. They host Marist on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday at 3 p.m.
