HAMILTON, N.Y. -- A 1-under-par 71 propelled Bucknell senior Brian Bartow (Rye, N.Y./Rye Neck) to his first career tournament win on Sunday at the Colgate Invitational, and the Bison team finished second, just one stroke behind host Colgate.
Bartow backed up an opening-ropund 73 with Sunday's 71, making him the only player in the field to finish the tournament at even par or better. Bartow, an All-Patriot League performer in 2009, held off Lafayette's Rob Robertson by two strokes. His previous best finish was a tie for third at the 2008 Bucknell Invitational.
The Bison posted a 301 on Sunday, the best score in the nine-team field by four strokes. They needed one more shot to catch Colgate, however. The Raiders opened with a 295 and finished with a 305 for a 36-hole total of 600. The Bison were one back at 601, followed by Laval (606), Lafayette (613), Fordham (623), AIC (626), Ottawa (631), Le Moyne (631) and Colgate's B team (645).
Bartow wasn't the only Bucknell player to have a satisfying start to the 2009-10 season. Andrew Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), the defending Patriot League champion, carded a 1-over 73 on Sunday and finished in a tie for third place at 148. Jeff Pike (Rye, N.Y./Rye) posted a 74 on Saturday before slipping to an 80 in the final round, and he finished in a tie for 16th place.
Freshman Dan Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) shot 78-79, and junior Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor) shot 81-78.
This is the sixth straight year in which Bucknell has finished in the top three at the Colgate Invitational.
The Bison will host their annual fall tournament next Friday and Saturday at the Bucknell Golf Club.
