NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's soccer team continued a number of themes on Sunday afternoon, but the most important one was another victory, a 1-0 verdict at Iona that came courtesy of freshman Jenna Tryon's header off a corner kick with only 2:46 to play.
Bucknell has now won three straight matches and is over .500 for the first time this season at 4-3. All four victories have been by one goal, and in three of the four the winning score has come in the 88th minute or later. Also, Tryon (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) became the fourth different Bison this season to score her first career goal. Bucknell now has seven goals this season, each coming from a different player.
There were plenty of shots in the first-ever meeting between Bucknell and Iona, but good goalkeeping from both sides kept the game scoreless until the final minutes. Bucknell outshot the Gaels (1-5-1) 21-18 overall and 10-6 in shots on frame. Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) launched a game-high eight shots.
Bucknell split the goalkeeper duties, with Colleen Garrehy (Danville, Calif./Carondelet) making four saves in the first half and Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) stopping two shots in the second stanza. Suzanne Baldissard made nine saves for Iona.
Tryon's winning goal came off a corner kick from Caitlin Holtz (Freehold, N.J./The Peddie School). Holtz, who led the Patriot League with eight assists in 2008, picked up her second of this season, both coming on corner kicks.
It was Bucknell's second 1-0 win in the last 48 hours, and the Bison defense has now posted 252 consecutive scoreless minutes.
Bucknell is back in action next Friday night at home, taking on Marist at 7 p.m.
