PRINCETON, N.J. – Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) scored four goals and eight other Bison found the back of the net once as the Bucknell men's water polo team defeated MIT 12-5 Saturday morning at the Princeton Invitational. The win helped the Bison improve to 3-2 on the year, including 3-0 against unranked opponents.
Bucknell, which is ranked 20th nationally, used a seven-goal first half to take a commanding 7-1 lead into halftime. All 17 players on the Bison roster played in the contest as they held on for the seven-goal margin of victory. Bucknell and MIT last met at the same event last year with the Bison winning 12-6.
Hyden, who now has 14 goals in five games this year, registered four goals and an assist to pace the balanced offense that featured eight other goal scorers. Hyden had five points in the contest, making him one of five Bison to post multiple-point outings. Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute), who had one goal and two assists, was second on the team with three points. Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville), who dished out two assists, as well as Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) and Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), posted two points apiece. Kalter and Ang each recorded a goal and an assist.
All three goalies on the Bison roster appeared in the game and combined to stop six shots. Donahue made three first-half saves, while Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) recorded a pair of stops in 11 minutes of action. Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) played the final five minutes and tallied one save.
Kalter was strong in front of the goalies with a team-best three steals.
Bucknell, which has an average margin of victory of better than seven goals in its three wins, will square off against No. 19 Brown in its second game of the day at 4 p.m. The Bison were 2-0 against the Bears in 2008 with both contests decided by 11-9 tallies.
