HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Bucknell women's soccer team got off to a tough start, dropping its 2009 season opener 4-1 to Towson in the first game of the James Madison/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational. Sophomore Megan DeGennaro (Westlake Village, Calif./La Reina) scored the lone goal for the Bison, but Towson had already tallied four times by the time Bucknell tallied.
Towson (1-1), which already had a game under its belt coming into the tournament, received two goals and two assists from Erica Marshall and two more goals from Phyllicia Rosselli.
The Bison put on the pressure early, launching the game's first four shots in the opening 15 minutes. Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) took the first two, including a shot that had to be turned aside by defender Alex Davis just over three minutes into the match.
Towson settled in midway through the first half and broke the scoreless deadlock in the 37th minute when Rosselli finished a passing combination from Marshall and Cheyenne Skidmore.
Bison keeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made a save in the opening minute of the second half, but moments later Marshall scored from 16 yards out to make it 2-0. In the 59th minute, Roselli punched in a rebound off a Marshall shot for Towson's third goal.
Freshman Sandita McDermott made her collegiate debut in goal later in the second half and made one save while allowing Marshall's second goal with 8:31 remaining.
Trailing 4-0, DeGennaro scored an unassisted goal with 3:44 left to play, deflecting one in off the Towson keeper from a sharp angle on the end line.
The final shot chart was even at 14 apiece. Kristen Sample made seven saves for Towson, while Sutton had four stops in 65 minutes for Bucknell. Towson attempted four corner kicks, while the Bison did not attempt a corner.
Bucknell will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, taking on 2008 NCAA Sweet Sixteen participant James Madison at 1:30 p.m.
